Past
The Internet was at first only used by the government but as it became more popular the common people began to use it as well. Because of the Cold War the government created ARPAnet (Advanced Research Project Agency), because they felt that if a Soviet attack was to happen on the nation's telephone system. They feared that just one missile could destroy the whole network that made communication possible. A scientist from M.I.T. and ARPA named Licklider proposed a "galactic network" of computers that could talk to one another which would allow for government leaders to communicate even the Soviets destroyed the system. Another scientist from M.I.T. developed "packet switching" in 1965, this was used to break down data into blocks,or packets, before they were sent to their destination. Eventually in 1991 a man named Berners-Lee made the internet into a "web" of information which is what we use today.

                                                                          Present

Today, the majority of our society relies on the internet for their jobs, social networking, and finding information in general. Today the internet is used not just by the government as it was in the past but for the public as well. It allows for us to get information that would have been difficult and near impossible to find in lesser time and is more convenient. The internet is not just used for finding information and gaining knowledge it is also used for social media to make it easier to connect and stay in touch with your fellow peers.

In the future I think the internet will still be just as popular however I believe they will find a way to make it faster, have more information, and safer. Today computer hacking is an issue however in the future I think they will solve this to make it safer for users. No matter how far in the future we go I think the internet will always be a big part of  out society.
